April 2018

Dear Parents,

I sure hope Spring has sprung by the time you read this!  As June approaches I am acutely aware of the time that has passed since September.  June hurtles towards us and there is still so much to teach, so much to learn, and so much to do.

Ms. Kristin and Ms. Meggie continue to help our youngest children discover their growing capabilities. This new unit is titled “Fun with Food”! They will make cinnamon pretzels, play with dough (and spaghetti), paint with fruit and sample many tasty and healthy treats.  At the end of the month each will have a small repertoire of snacks they can make “all by myself.”

The three-year olds go on safari this month and study the animals at the zoo.  As the month goes by, they become experts on animal behavior.  For many of the children a visit to Norfolk’s Lafayette Zoo would be a marvelous reinforcement of the animals they are studying.  It’s also a wonderful way to spend a warm spring day.  Don’t forget to ask your children about the animal names in Spanish as well!

After continuing a few more weeks of Castles and Dragons, our four-year-olds take an in-depth look at nature and begin their study of local birds.  This is really an impressive unit. By the time it’s over, the children can accurately identify about twenty-five different species of birds as they return to Tidewater for the spring. It also ends with a marvelous bird party (pass the worms, please)!

In January, our pre kindergarten class learned an incredible amount about endangered species and the habitats necessary for their survival.  They now focus on tropical rain-forests.  The children become aware of the fragility of this unique ecosystem as well as experts on bugs, snakes, and other inhabitants of this vanishing habitat.

Kindergarten has an exciting month.  Mrs. Profilet and Mrs. Muncy’s classes will be learning about the stages of plant development, butterfly development, and frog development using complete hands on approach.  The kindergarten rooms have become laboratories where seeds sprout; caterpillars spin cocoons, and tadpole’s metamorphosis into frogs.  The children’s academic progress amazes me.  Many are now learning long vowel sounds and spelling!  As spring progresses we plan to incorporate creative writing into each week’s lesson.  As these masterpieces come home it is important that you be extremely positive in your comments.  PLEASE don’t make any suggestions for improvement and don’t even think of mentioning spelling.  Creative writing is a very personal and sensitive process.  A careless remark can be devastating.

Conference Day
May 15th is conference day.  School is closed while you discover what wonderful children you have.  And they really are wonderful!  Child-care will be available this day for those enrolled in our all-day programs only (the 7:00-6:00 program).

Sunscreen
As the weather turns warm many children sunburn.  If your child is sensitive to the sun, remember to put sunscreen on him/her before coming to school.  If you would like to have sunscreen applied to your child throughout the day, please fill out the school’s sunscreen form available at the front desk.

Summer at BBMS
We have sent out information on the summer programs at Bellamy, Greenbrier, and Broad Bay Manor.  If you missed it and are interested, talk to your director.  Classes are beginning to fill!

Spring appears to be a busy and exciting time for all of us.  If you have any questions or concerns we’re only a phone call away.

Sincerely,
Jen
