Broad Bay

Broad Bay Manor October 2022

Dear Parents,

School is off to a truly wonderful start! This past month has given us the time to renew old friendships and explore new relationships. Watching the children form and reform their social groups is quite exciting. Their sincerity and innocence as they venture around the classroom are touching. They are truly learning socially as well as academically. I hope you are as pleased as we are with your child’s progress.

Last month the 2’s children were introduced to themselves and each other.  Now we extend that idea, and focus just on the senses. There will be lots of cooking, crafts, and songs.  Our youngest children are adjusting beautifully to the classroom and each other.

If you thought September was fun, October is even better if you are three! Ms. Kelly, Ms. Susan, Ms. Stacy will introduce Eric Carle; the celebrated children’s author. His books are delightful and the children will enjoy not only his emotional characters, but also his colorful and crafty illustrative techniques.  Lots of cooking this month, thanks to Jack, his Mama, and Walter the baker.  The threes finish the month with stories and crafts relating to Halloween.  Ms. Jamie Cruz has been busy introducing the students to the Spanish language!

Ms. Leigh and Ms. Dorothy’s 4’s classes finish their alphabet unit with a party fit for royalty.  Crowns, sparkles, and delicious cookies end the children’s introduction/review of our language’s building blocks. The next focus is on fall and those pesky backyard critters; squirrels.  The month continues with a quick study of more advanced shapes and secondary colors.  They get quite involved in finger-painting and color mixing with different mediums.  The month ends, of course, with stories, crafts, poems, and songs about Halloween.  This holiday seems to be created for four year-olds.  Letter and number recognition as well as phonics instruction continue on an individual basis.

Ms. Moesta and Ms. Withers’ pre-kindergarten classes will hit the trail as they learn about horses!  They will explore the different types and parts of one of man’s oldest animal friends. Individualized language arts and math instruction is ongoing.

The Kindergarten class will end the transportation unit with a brief study of the solar system and our planet, Earth. We finish with a wonderful astronaut party complete with space food.   While amongst the stars, we study the constellations and the mythology behind each star group.   Hopefully they will be able to find the Big Dipper on Halloween night. We will, of course, devote a week to pumpkins and scarecrows. Intertwined with all this fun, Ms. Profilet will communicate a variety math and phonics facts.

October is a wonderfully special month because of Halloween.  Halloween, with carved pumpkins, “spooky” songs, and stories can by very exciting! The magic of make-believe is so special to a young child because of the excitement and delicious thrill of dress up. However, along with this excitement comes some anxiety. Three year-olds are very new to the idea of pretend and even four year-olds aren’t always sure what’s real and what’s not. We really work hard to make this a fun experience and emphasize the silly, not the scary, aspect of Halloween.

October 26, 27, and 28:  Broad Bay Manor School will celebrate fall with a wonderful Halloween program! A costume parade has become a traditional part of BBMS’s presentation and we will have the program outside and weather permitting. I encourage parents to bring a blanket (or something to sit on) if you do not prefer to stand. Please check your child’s class date and time below.

The children can perform in their Halloween costume! It works best if you send your child to school in his/her costume with a change of clothes in his/her book bag. Be sure all pieces of the costume are clearly labeled so it can all be returned. We will help them change out of their costume after the program.  If your child suddenly decides not to dress up or parade, IT’S OK.  Please don’t pressure or force your child to participate.  Some children just don’t feel comfortable in programs and that’s perfectly all right.  They make a marvelous audience.

Please tell your child’s teacher if you take him/her home with you after their performance.

November 8th: Conference Day.   This is a day to discuss your child’s academic and social progress at BBMS with their teacher!  Report cards will be sent home the Friday before Conference Day for you to review. School is open for all-day children only (these are children enrolled in the 7:00-6:00 program).  If you are not sure if your child’s schedule meets the all-day requirement, please ask.   I will be making the conference schedule soon and will send it home later this month.  If you prefer a specific time please let us know ASAP and I will do my best to make it work.

Medications: Please don’t ever send medicine to school inside a book bag. All medication, whether prescription or not, must be brought in with the appropriate paperwork by the parent through the front. No exceptions!

Morning Drop Off:  Remember class starts at 8:45. If your student is not in the ALL DAY or BEFORE SCHOOL program, please do not drop off any earlier than 8:30.  Its also best for your children to be at school by 9:00 to get the FULL curriculum.  Students coming in late will not always be able to receive the entirety of what we offer.

I hope your family has a wonderful beginning to this lovely time of year.  Fall is full of traditions, make believe, and celebrations.  We can’t wait to share them with your children!

                                                                                          Jennifer Cox
