What we are learning

Ms. Sammy and Ms. Kendall continue helping our youngest with the exciting process of learning. Our two’s have grown and matured at an impressive rate. This month they will introduce the children to the colors all around us! They will explore color through food, animals, textures, and lots of books.

The three-year-old classes will be introduced to Eric Carle, the celebrated children’s author. His books are delightful, and the children will enjoy not only his emotional characters, but also his colorful and crafty illustrative techniques. Lots of cooking this month, thanks to Walter the baker.

Our four classes will study Dr. Seuss and his zany characters. The Cat in the Hat and all of his friends—Thigwick, Bartholomew Cubbins, Horton and Yertle become our vehicles for learning. Rhymes, math, crafts, and songs all focus on the Seuss themes during these last days. It all ends with the notorious Breakfast at Beach Manor featuring Green Eggs and Ham (of course)! The children have a grand time with all of this while an incredible amount of learning takes place.

The Pre-K classes will hit the trail and learn about horses. This is an exciting unit for the children, complete with pony rides and a cookout around the campfire (pretend of course!).

Ms. Price’s Kindergarten class will go around the world. It’s a full month’s trip, as we learn about children in other countries. The emphasis of study is the dress, food, homes, and customs of countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia. If any of you have traveled and can share pictures or items with the class, please call me or your child’s teacher.

Spanish: The weather is warming up; it’s time to get outside and learn all about animals (La Granja). Ms. Maria will continue reviewing colores y numeros. This is going to be a fun month, who doesn’t love animals.

What we are learning

2’s– Ms Erika and Karen, our pillars of patience, begin April with an in-depth study of words and their opposites to our two-year old classes. With easel painting, sponge printing, spin art and backed papers, this is a grand time for our youngest.

3’s– Our three-year olds begin April with nursery tales. The children explore classic stories as they grow Jack’s beanstalk, peek at the troll under the Billy goat’s bridge, and visit the three bears.

4’s– The four-year olds depart from their fantasy world of make-believe and explore the fascinating world of our feathered friends. As local birds migrate back into the area, they should be able to identify most of them. Cindi, Brittney, and Kelly teach them the characteristics of twenty-five different species and help them create an amazing bird book. We’ll end with yet another party, complete with worms and seeds!

PreK– Ms. Michelle’s pre-K class moves down the food chain to investigate insects. Bugs fascinate children and Michelle uses their curiosity to educate them about useful and harmful insects. The high point of this unit materializes in May when we get to watch ants tunnel.

K– The kindergarten class takes a trip back in time to the age of reptiles and studies dinosaurs. These budding paleontologists learn to identify close to twenty-five dinosaurs before attending a dinosaur hunt at the end of the month. This is one of our favorite units, and the children love it. The children’s academic progress amazes me. Many are now learning long vowel sounds and spelling! As spring progresses, we plan to incorporate creative writing into each week’s lesson. As these masterpieces come home, it is important that you be extremely positive in your comments. Please don’t make any suggestions for improvement and don’t even think of mentioning spelling. Creative writing is a very personal and sensitive process. A careless remark can be devastating.

What We Are Learning

2’s- Ms. Kristin and Ms. Bre continue to help our youngest children discover their growing capabilities. This new unit is titled “Fun with Food”! They will make cinnamon pretzels, play with dough (and spaghetti), paint with fruit and sample many tasty and healthy treats.  At the end of the month each will have a small repertoire of snacks they can make “all by myself.”

3’s- For our 3’s, this month involves a delicious study of what we feed our body. Our goal is to help the children learn about “good” foods and the main food groups. This unit involves quite a bit of cooking and sampling with each food group. They will make a variety of real food and paint with vegetables and fruit. The grand finale is a yummy party, and a class created cookbook!

4’s- The 4-year-old classes will study Dr. Seuss and his zany characters. The Cat in the Hat and all his friends– Horton, and Yertle become our vehicles for learning. Rhymes, math, crafts, and songs all focus on Seuss themes during this month. It all ends with the notorious breakfast at Broad Bay featuring Green Eggs and Ham (of course!) The children have a grand time with all this while an incredible amount of learning takes place.

Pre-k- Our pre-kindergarten class have learned an incredible amount about endangered species and the habitats necessary for their survival.  They now focus on tropical rainforests.  The children become aware of the fragility of this unique ecosystem as well as experts on bugs, snakes, and other inhabitants of this vanishing habitat.

K- Kindergarten’s unit of study is the human body.   It’s time to find out a bit more about ourselves!  We’ll start by looking closely at our skin and work our way through the body systems to the heart (the most important part!).  The children’s academic progress amazes me.  Many are now learning long vowel sounds and spelling!  As spring progresses, we plan to incorporate creative writing into each week’s lesson.  As these masterpieces come home it is important that you be extremely positive in your comments.  PLEASE don’t make any suggestions for improvement and don’t even think of mentioning spelling.  Creative writing is a very personal and sensitive process.  A careless remark can be devastating.

10 Benefits of Private Preschool

Beach Manor Private Preschool in Virginia Beach

Choosing the right private preschool for your child’s early education is an important decision. Private preschools offer several advantages compared to regular preschools that can set the foundation for lifelong learning and success.

Benefits of A Private Preschool

Here are some benefits of a private preschool that both you and your child will enjoy:

  1. Smaller Class Sizes & Individualized Attention

Private preschools typically have smaller student-to-teacher ratios, allowing for more personalized instruction, focusing on each child’s strengths, interests, and areas for growth.

  1. High-Quality Curriculum & Enrichment Programs

Many private preschools offer structured, well-rounded curricula that include STEM, arts, music, foreign languages, and hands-on learning  to enhance critical thinking and creativity.

  1. Stronger Academic Foundation

Private preschools often have advanced learning opportunities that go beyond basic early childhood education such as early literacy, math, and problem-solving skills in engaging and interactive ways.

  1. Highly Qualified Teachers

Many private preschools employ certified and highly trained educators with specialized backgrounds in early childhood education, with ongoing professional development to stay updated on the best teaching practices.

  1. More Parental Involvement & Community Feel

Private preschools often encourage strong parent-teacher communication through conferences, workshops, and volunteer opportunities. Parents become part of a close-knit community, fostering lifelong friendships for both children and families.

  1. Safer & More Nurturing Environment

Private preschools typically have stricter safety policies, secure facilities, and low student-teacher ratios that allow for better supervision.

  1. Emphasis on Social & Emotional Development

Many private preschools focus on building emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and communication skills, integrating character education, mindfulness, and collaborative play to develop social skills and self-confidence.

  1. Specialized Learning Approaches

Private preschools offer customized teaching methods to fit different learning styles.

  1. Easier Transition to Private or Advanced Schools

Attending a private preschool can make it easier for children to be accepted into top private elementary schools or advanced academic programs.

  1. Greater Flexibility in Teaching Methods

Private preschools are not bound by state-mandated curriculums, allowing for more innovative and engaging teaching methods. Teachers have flexibility to adjust lesson plans to better fit the needs of the students.

What is a Montessori Preschool?

Montessori Preschool vs. Regular Preschool

If you need to decide where to send your child for their Pre-K early education then you should consider the Montessori preschool Broad Bay Manor in Virginia Beach. Our Montessori preschool is a specialized early childhood education program that is based on a child-centered approach. This method emphasizes independent learning, hands-on activities, and self-directed exploration in a carefully prepared environment. Allowing children to get both the individual attention they need and the freedom to explore their enviornment. Read more to learn about the differences between a montessori preschool and a regular preschool.

How Are They Different?

The choice between a Montessori school and a regular preschool depends on your child’s personality, learning style, and your family’s educational goals.

Teaching Approach:

– Montessori preschools are Child-led, with teachers serving as guides who observe and facilitate learning based on the child’s interests.

– Regular preschools are Teacher-led, with structured lessons and group activities that follow a fixed curriculum.

Classroom Environment:

– Montessori classrooms are organized with carefully curated materials designed to support hands-on learning. Providing a calm, orderly, and independent environment.

– Regular preschools often have a mix of toys, art supplies, and educational tools with a more play-focused or entertainment-driven atmosphere.

Curriculum Structure:

-Montessori preschools have flexible, individualized curriculum tailored to your child’s developmental stage, emphasizing practical life skills, sensory activities, and academic foundations.

-Regular preschools follow a standardized curriculum with a focus on group instruction, often centered around themes, play, and socialization.

Role of the Teacher:

– Montessori teachers observe and guide, allowing children to discover and learn at their own pace.

-Regular preschool teachers actively direct and lead activities, often following a set lesson plan for the entire class.

Age Groups:

– Montessori preschools have multi-age classrooms that encourage peer learning and mentorship among students.

– Regular preschools typically group children by single age levels, with minimal age mixing.

Development Focus:

– Montessori preschools emphasize holistic development, including cognitive, emotional, social, and physical growth, to foster independence and intrinsic motivation.

– Regular preschools focus more on socialization and preparing children for kindergarten through structured group activities.

As we move through the school year, our children continue grow in knowledge as well as stature as they explored dinosaurs, opposites, zoo animals, the wild west and past presidents this past month.

March has arrived with occasional warm days that promise spring. It will be a busy month; with any luck we will find that tricky leprechaun and all the fun that he creates. Thank you so much for continuing to share your children with us. We feel like the luckiest bunch of teachers to watch your children learn and grow.

Best regards,
Betsey Cremin

Summer at Broad Bay Manor
June 23-August 15

Our summer programs are designed for preschool and elementary age children. The morning routine consists of play, crafts, individualized academics, recess, snack, and group activities. Don’t forget SPLASH DAY once a week. Elementary age children (rising first grade or older) enrolled in the all-day program may participate in field trips! Summer is a wonderful time to explore, and we offer a variety of summer schedules. We will have two, three, and five-day programs, both half and full day.

Summer registration forms and more info about the program will be sent through Brightwheel and in your child’s folder, look for the bright green paper. This is a great time for the children to stay active and continue their academics between school years!

Please send back the form to reserve a spot for your child as soon as you can. All registration fees will be invoiced through Brightwheel. Please let us know if you have any questions, we are here to help!

Reminders

Thank you to those that have completed the online registration through Brightwheel. If you have not, please complete the enrollment form so your child is fully enrolled for fall. Let me know if you need the forms sent again! Although most classes are full at BBMS for Fall 2025, there are openings in a few of our classes at Broad Bay Manor and our other schools in the area. The curriculum, schedule, equipment and even the parties are exactly the same!

What We Are Learning

2’s- The two year old classes will explore the many adventures of Pete the Cat. These best-selling picture books present the wiry Pete with his white shoes and eclectic friends showing that it’s cool to be you. With boundless poise, creativity and energy, Ms. Kristin and Ms. Bre do an exceptional job with their charges.

3’s- Our three year-old classes will be introduce life on the farm. The focus of this unit is farm animals and their products. Although the school doesn’t take field trips, the petting zoo at the Norfolk Zoo and Hunt Club Farm have many farm animals the children can touch and feed. As the children become more aware of their environment, their curiosity deepens. These studies are designed to help them organize their world.

4’s – The four-year-old classes take an in-depth look at nature and begin their study of local birds. This is really an impressive unit. By the time it’s over, the children can accurately identify about twenty-five different species of birds as they return to Tidewater for the spring. It also ends with a marvelous bird party (pass the worms, please)!

Pre-K– Our Pre-K classes will now study the world of insects! Bugs are fascinating little creatures, and the children start looking very closely at them with this unit. We hope to raise a crop of ladybugs and watch our family of ants build their home!

K– The kindergarten class will study Dr. Seuss and his zany characters. The Cat in the Hat and all his friends- Bartholomew Cubbins, Horton, and Yertle become our vehicles for learning. Rhymes, math, crafts, and songs all focus on Seuss themes during these days. It all ends with the notorious breakfast at Broad Bay featuring Green Eggs and Ham (of course!).
