Broad Bay Manor School Newsletter April ’25

April ’25
Director’s Desk

I sure hope Spring has sprung by the time you read this! Spring appears to be a busy and exciting time for all of us.  You will be able to see signs of spring all over the building.  Spring sessions of soccer shots and yoga will be in full swing. Art and Science class and dance will also incorporate Spring themes into their lessons.  We will take full advantage of the warmer weather by spending more time outside, having snack and playing games.

As we move further and further into the school year, I am acutely aware of the time that has passed since September.  June hurtles towards us and there is still so much to teach, so much to learn, and so much to do. Thank you once again for sharing your children with us. It’s such a pleasure to watch them grow. If you have any questions or concerns, we’re only a phone call away.

Sincerely,

Betsey Cremin

Reminders

PERSONAL ITEMS:  It’s that time of the year to switch your child’s extra clothes to clothes for warmer weather. Please label each item.

SUNSCREEN: As the weather turns warm many children sunburn.  If your child is sensitive to the sun, remember to put sunscreen on him/her before coming to school.  If you would like to have sunscreen applied to your child throughout the day, please fill out the school’s sunscreen form available at the front desk. We have sunscreen at school for your child to use.

What We Are Learning

2’s- Ms. Kristin and Ms. Bre continue to help our youngest children discover their growing capabilities. This new unit is titled “Fun with Food”! They will make cinnamon pretzels, play with dough (and spaghetti), paint with fruit and sample many tasty and healthy treats.  At the end of the month each will have a small repertoire of snacks they can make “all by myself.”

3’s- For our 3’s, this month involves a delicious study of what we feed our body. Our goal is to help the children learn about “good” foods and the main food groups. This unit involves quite a bit of cooking and sampling with each food group. They will make a variety of real food and paint with vegetables and fruit. The grand finale is a yummy party, and a class created cookbook!

4’s- The 4-year-old classes will study Dr. Seuss and his zany characters. The Cat in the Hat and all his friends– Horton, and Yertle become our vehicles for learning. Rhymes, math, crafts, and songs all focus on Seuss themes during this month. It all ends with the notorious breakfast at Broad Bay featuring Green Eggs and Ham (of course!) The children have a grand time with all this while an incredible amount of learning takes place.

Pre-k- Our pre-kindergarten class have learned an incredible amount about endangered species and the habitats necessary for their survival.  They now focus on tropical rainforests.  The children become aware of the fragility of this unique ecosystem as well as experts on bugs, snakes, and other inhabitants of this vanishing habitat.

K- Kindergarten’s unit of study is the human body.   It’s time to find out a bit more about ourselves!  We’ll start by looking closely at our skin and work our way through the body systems to the heart (the most important part!).  The children’s academic progress amazes me.  Many are now learning long vowel sounds and spelling!  As spring progresses, we plan to incorporate creative writing into each week’s lesson.  As these masterpieces come home it is important that you be extremely positive in your comments.  PLEASE don’t make any suggestions for improvement and don’t even think of mentioning spelling.  Creative writing is a very personal and sensitive process.  A careless remark can be devastating.

March ’25
Director’s Desk

February was fun month with lots of love. Amazing memories were created by a winter wonderful. We love to see how excited they are play and explore. As we move through the school year, our children continue grow in knowledge as well as stature as they explored dinosaurs, opposites, zoo animals, the wild west and past presidents this past month.

March has arrived with occasional warm days that promise spring. It will be a busy month; with any luck we will find that tricky leprechaun and all the fun that he creates. Thank you so much for continuing to share your children with us. We feel like the luckiest bunch of teachers to watch your children learn and grow.

Best regards,

Summer at Broad Bay Manor
June 23-August 15

Our summer programs are designed for preschool and elementary age children. The morning routine consists of play, crafts, individualized academics, recess, snack, and group activities. Don’t forget SPLASH DAY once a week. Elementary age children (rising first grade or older) enrolled in the all-day program may participate in field trips! Summer is a wonderful time to explore, and we offer a variety of summer schedules. We will have two, three, and five-day programs, both half and full day.

Summer registration forms and more info about the program will be sent through Brightwheel and in your child’s folder, look for the bright green paper. This is a great time for the children to stay active and continue their academics between school years!

Please send back the form to reserve a spot for your child as soon as you can. All registration fees will be invoiced through Brightwheel. Please let us know if you have any questions, we are here to help!

Reminders

Thank you to those that have completed the online registration through Brightwheel. If you have not, please complete the enrollment form so your child is fully enrolled for fall. Let me know if you need the forms sent again! Although most classes are full at BBMS for Fall 2025, there are openings in a few of our classes at Broad Bay Manor and our other schools in the area. The curriculum, schedule, equipment and even the parties are exactly the same!

What We Are Learning

2’s- The two year old classes will explore the many adventures of Pete the Cat. These best-selling picture books present the wiry Pete with his white shoes and eclectic friends showing that it’s cool to be you. With boundless poise, creativity and energy, Ms. Kristin and Ms. Bre do an exceptional job with their charges.

3’s- Our three year-old classes will be introduce life on the farm. The focus of this unit is farm animals and their products. Although the school doesn’t take field trips, the petting zoo at the Norfolk Zoo and Hunt Club Farm have many farm animals the children can touch and feed. As the children become more aware of their environment, their curiosity deepens. These studies are designed to help them organize their world.

4’s – The four-year-old classes take an in-depth look at nature and begin their study of local birds. This is really an impressive unit. By the time it’s over, the children can accurately identify about twenty-five different species of birds as they return to Tidewater for the spring. It also ends with a marvelous bird party (pass the worms, please)!

Pre-K– Our Pre-K classes will now study the world of insects! Bugs are fascinating little creatures, and the children start looking very closely at them with this unit. We hope to raise a crop of ladybugs and watch our family of ants build their home!

K– The kindergarten class will study Dr. Seuss and his zany characters. The Cat in the Hat and all his friends- Bartholomew Cubbins, Horton, and Yertle become our vehicles for learning. Rhymes, math, crafts, and songs all focus on Seuss themes during these days. It all ends with the notorious breakfast at Broad Bay featuring Green Eggs and Ham (of course!).

Broad Bay Manor School Newsletter February ’25

February ’25
Director’s Desk

February may be the shortest month, but it is also the busiest.  With Valentine’s Day, two president’s birthdays, and Ground Hog Day, February always promises excitement!

Registration for next year is going great!  It is satisfying to know so many of you are pleased with BBMS’s program. I want to thank you all for your support within our community! I can’t tell you how many times we get new families looking at Broad Bay Manor after getting referrals from current parents.  Hearing this makes my heart happy.  BBMS is feeling the love to have such supportive and involved families!

Best regards,

Betsey Cremin

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day, with its message of love and friendship, is special to children and to BBMS.  Each class exchanges valentines and has a party.  Enclosed is a list with the number of children in each class.  Please send in valentines for each student in your child’s class, and we’ll take care of the rest.  The teachers have requested that you NOT “address” the valentines–just sign them with your child’s name.  This way the children can easily pass them out.  Remember, we are a nut free school.  Any food items should be unopened in store bought packaging.

Reminders

  • Please complete enrollment forms and parent agreements for the 2025-2026 school year. All forms can be found on Brightwheel.
  • Please remember to bring a warm coat, hat and gloves for cold days, we will continue to go outside to play.
  • Be sure to check Brightwheel for any school closings or delays.  You will also get a message as soon as a decision is made.  We typically follow the public school’s closings initially.  We try our best to keep children, parents, and our staff safe during these times.
  • Sick Policy:  Parents will keep student home if student is showing signs of sickness such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or other symptoms that may indicate the child is ill. Students with a fever (100.4 or higher) may not return to school until 36 hours fever free without a fever reducing medication. The school will notify parents if child becomes sick or unwell at school.

Little Caesars Pizza Kit Fundraiser

Please consider participating in our winter fundraiser. Little Caesars offers several options for kits that can be made at home. What a fun way for the kiddos to help in the kitchen and to support our school. All Pizza Kit, Bread Kit and Cookie dough orders are shipped direct to your home via FedEx.

Summer 2025

Summer registration forms and more info about the program will go out the beginning of March. We will have two, three and five-day programs, both half and full day. This is a great time for the children to stay active and continue their academics between school years! What We Are Learning

2’s- Ms. Kristin and Ms. Bre continue to help our youngest children with the exciting process of learning.  The children will explore the concept of opposites as they compare and contrast the world around us!

3’s The three-year-olds go on a safari this month and study the animals at the zoo.  As the month goes by, they become experts on animal features and behavior.

4’s Our four year old classes are saddled up and moseying along as they learn about horses, cowboys, and rodeos during the Wild West unit.  This is an exciting unit that combines the factual information on horses with delightful stories of the American cowboy.   In keeping with their developmental levels, the fours will enjoy stories and songs about the Wild West.  The unit ends as the children enjoy a “rodeo,” BBMS style!

Pre-K- Ms. Moesta and Ms. Withers will lead the PreK classes in covering the hodgepodge of February–Ground Hog Day, Lincoln and Washington’s Birthdays, and Valentine’s Day.  It’s a great time for the children to learn a bit about our country’s history, the pledge of allegiance, and those anecdotes about George and Abe.  Busy

K- The kindergarten classes take a trip back in time to the age of reptiles to study dinosaurs.  These budding paleontologists learn to identify close to twenty-five dinosaurs before attending a dinosaur hunt at the end of the month.  This is one of our favorite studies, and the children love it.  Much time is also spent working on hand writing, math facts, and the concept of fractions.

Reminders

Outside Time: Even in the winter, we are still going outside several times during the day. Please make sure your child has a warm coat, a hat and/or mittens. Labeling all belongings is very helpful in making sure all items go home with the right child.

SICK POLICY: For us to keep ALL our children as healthy as possible we must work together. Please DO NOT send in your child if they are sick. If they are showing any signs of sickness, consider keeping them out of school to help prevent exposure to other children. If we are ALL in keeping with this courtesy, we can greatly reduce the spread of illness throughout the school. A healthier school means a healthier child for you! Our official rule is a child may not come to school until they have been fever free (without meds) for 36 hours. If your child has vomited or had diarrhea in the last 24 hours stay home as well. In the end, a sick child belongs at home.

MEDICATIONS: It helps us to know if your child is on any medication. The side effects of many antibiotics and decongestants include behavioral changes that dramatically alter classroom performance and actions.

What We Are Learning

2’s- Our two’s have grown and matured at an impressive rate.  This month Ms. Bre and Ms. Kristin will introduce the children to the colors all around us!  They will explore color through food, animals, textures, and lots of books.

3’s-Our three-year-olds begin January with a study of community helpers. The teachers introduce the children to the people in their neighborhood. Fireman, policeman, doctors, and dentists are just a few of the helpers we discuss!

4’s -The four-year-olds come back to a unit on BEARS!  From Corduroy, Pooh, and Paddington to pandas and polar bears, they investigate bears, their habits, and habitats.  Some activities you might hear about include packing Paddington’s suitcase, painting Pooh bear, and ultimately our teddy bear picnic.  The fours indulge in fantasy to their heart’s content.

Pre-K- Our PreK classes look at the world from a geographical and environmental angle. Ms. Moesta and Ms. Withers introduce their children to some basic geographical concepts using habitats as their motif.  By mid-month the children are learning about the fragility of various habitats and the interdependence between the environment and its inhabitants.   An investigation of endangered species concludes the unit.

K- This month the kindergarten class goes around the world.  It’s a full month’s trip, and we learn about children from other countries.  The emphasis of study is the dress, food, homes, and customs of countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia.  If any of you have traveled and can share pictures or items with the class, please contact your child’s teacher.  We would love for you to share your experiences!

December ’24
Director’s Desk

The days are shorter, the nights are snugly, and there is such a hint of anticipation and excitement in the air that it must be December! This is a very exciting and busy month for us all. With an emphasis on joy and love, this holiday season will be a happy and pleasant one. The classes devote the month of December to holiday preparations, both Christmas and Hanukkah. All the children will make crafts and learn songs appropriate for each celebration.

In addition to our routine academics, this month’s activities will include making and wrapping their gifts for you, baking, and preparing for the upcoming holidays. Kindergarten studies the instruments of the orchestra to help them appreciate the music they will hear this holiday season. If any of you would care to share your expertise in this area, we sure would be grateful.

Thank you all so much for your donations of games and puzzles in November. We collected over 150 items to donate to the Noblemen of Virginia Beach. Ms. Aisha’s class is winner with most donations. They will enjoy an ice cream party.

We wish you a peaceful and pleasant holiday season from the entire BBMS staff. Thanks again for sharing it with us!

Reminders

If they are showing any signs of sickness, consider keeping them out of school to help prevent exposure to other children. We are now scheduling tours for the 2025-2026 year, please share our school with your friends and family with pre-school age children. Please help us grow our Broad Bay Manor School Family.

Registration 2025 - 2026

Although it seems terribly far in the future, now is the time to start planning for next school year. Those of you who plan on returning to our school next fall should plan to register. Families that are currently registered at BBMS will be able to register on January 6th, 2025. Registration forms will not be taken before that date.

Registration information will soon come home for the 2025-2026 school year. Parents will receive paper forms coming home with students and e-forms coming through Brightwheel.

Many parents of current four-year-old students are concerned about properly placing their child next year. Some parents will choose an additional preschool year before kindergarten, but some do not. If you are unsure if your student would be most successful with this additional year, I encourage you to consult with their current teacher, Ms. Charlynn or myself. Kindergarten is only open to those children turning 5 on or before September 30th. If your child turns 5 after this date, our PreK class is the correct placement.

If you are registering a sibling for the 2-year-old class, they must be 2 years old by May 31st. They are considered a current family and can register on January 6th.

Registration will not be open to new families until February.
